postpartum belly binding

abdominal & pelvic support after birth

postpartum belly binding in surrey & sussex

wrapping your belly with cloth supports the physical, emotional and hormonal transition within your postpartum body

in many global cultures there is a traditional practice to wrap the abdomen after childbirth to support & enhance body healing during the postpartum.

we see many examples of different cloths being used to bind the belly in countries such as malaysia, japan, latin america, india, africa including binding styles of the bengkung, faja & jamu traditions.

in the west, we sadly no longer carry the traditions of belly binding. the commonalities across the globe might support the belief that here too, we once wrapped our bellies with a local cloth that held a unique meaning and tradition to our culture. in practicing belly binding outside of a traditional culture i take time to share & discuss what this practice might mean to you personally, and give respect & acknowledgment to the teachers & cultures from which we learn today.

if you would like to explore how belly binding could nurture you in your own postpartum journey, you’ll find details of my offerings & booking below, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

tailor your binding experience

  • belly warming paste

this firming skin mask is traditionally applied to the belly during belly binding practice.

in many cultures pregnancy is seen as a “cool” state, this treatment brings warmth & stimulation to the pelvic area, supporting restoration after birth.

mix the aromatic spices with an oil of your choice and apply to the belly before you wrap the cloth.

the warming paste contains turmeric which will stain clothing! this is supplied with a protective cotton flannel cloth.

    cost: additional £10

  • binding cloth

i can provide you with a binding cloth if needed, which i will bring with me to our session.

    100% unbleached cotton muslin

strong, natural cloth that is the typical cloth used for belly binding

    13 meters length & approx 22cm wide

    raw or sewn edges available

    cost: additional £25

  • belly massage

45 minutes restorative rebozo & abdominal massage, using specifically blended, warming oils, to massage the belly area from the ribs, hips & pelvis.

the rebozo cloth will relax the muscles & ligaments around the belly which have been stretched over your pregnancy, improving circulation & supporting lymphatic drainage to move excess fluids.

massaging the belly before binding is a wonderful ritual that can help restore emotional wellbeing.

    cost: additional £50

benefits of belly binding

the primary purpose of belly binding is to support the body as it transitions during the postpartum.

there are many benefits from this practice;

  • provides back support, can help relieve back pain & restore postural balance after birth

  • supports the abdominal muscles as they return post-pregnancy, can assist as part of a holisitic programme to heal diastasis recti

  • holds the pelvis & connective tissues as they close after birth

  • when binding appropriately, provides support to pelvic floor muscles, can assist in pelvic floor rehabilitation

  • decreases duration of postpartum lochia bleeding whilst supporting the uterus to contract

  • gives emotional support, rebalancing the nervous system during this time of transition

binding is not shapewear!

this practice is a holisitic body healing and is not about assigning to a specific body image. the process of binding your body creates a space for a really deep connection with yourself and a place of ritual where you care for your wellbeing during your postpartum journey & beyond.

common questions

what is the history of belly binding?

the roots of binding are found within asian cultures, however we find similarities across cultures & continents. there is a history of the bengkung in malaysia, the faja in latin america, the sarashi in japan & the practice of jamu in postpartum healing within indonesia.

when could i begin binding?

it is common for this practice to begin within days of childbirth, usually around day 4-5 postpartum.

typically, the sooner you begin to bind the more benefit you can look to receive from the practice, however it’s really never too late & you can benefit from a binding practice several months or even years after birth.

the timing must feel comfortable for you & upon booking we can talk this through fully to find a window that feels good.

can i bind my belly after a caesarean?

yes, this can be done safely & comfortably once your wound has fully healed, typically around 4-6 weeks after birth.

you may choose to bind after your planned caesarean birth to support your recovery.

if you have booked in advance and your birth journey changes, we can have a chat about how you might wish to include belly binding - or not!

will binding help to heal my diastasis recti / abdominal separation?

belly binding is one component of healing, but can certainly be integrated into a practice, alongside breathwork, relevant exercise & nutrition, to support abdominal repair.

i am not a physical therapist but have a depth of understanding around body physiology in the pregnancy, birth & postpartum phase & can discuss and signpost to relevant therapists where needed.

how long do i bind for?

to gain full benefit from binding look to incorporate a daily practice to wear the bind from between 5-10 hours a day.

traditionally the belly is bound daily for the first 42-44 days after birth to assist the bodies return during the early postpartum - we will talk through what practice feels relevant & achievable for you, remember this is your journey.

can i breastfeed in it?

yes! the bind itself will cover from your hips, over the back & belly & lower ribs to sit just underneath the bra line. when worn the binding cloth helps to support postural alignment of the body & can help you avoid the dreading slouch!

the bind can be worn underneath clothes & some people enjoy the discretion the bind gives to cover the belly when breastfeeding.

can i use my own bind?

yes as long as it’s 100% cotton! please let me know in advance the type of bind you intend to use so i can be certain it will work to what you’re trying to achieve. i am able to supply you with a bind at cost or can signpost to a trusted supplier if you need.

can i bind after an episiotomy or tear?

if you have experienced an episiotomy or tear during your birth it is important to allow time for this area to fully heal before you begin binding. typically 4-6 weeks gives enough time for full healing, please talk through any concerns with your midwife or gp.

can i have my partner or a friend with me?

yes! i am more than happy for you to have someone you trust & feel comfortable with present, they can watch & learn how they can support you in your binding practice together.

where do you provide belly binding sessions?

i carry out the binding sessions within your own home, throughout areas of surrey & sussex.
