solstice meditation

The Winter Solstice is also know by many as the Sun's Birthday, at the end of the longest night the light returns and we see the days stretching & lengthening. As we mark the beginning of winter, we are already gazing forward to spring & the promise of longer days, the never ending cycle of life!

My first child, Reuben was a winter born baby & I feel like this is a really special time to be in the depths of pregnancy. There is the usual rush of Christmas, and yet there is also that sense of retreating, turning inwards with the sense of new beginnings ahead.

This is a beautiful time for sewing seeds, whether in the garden or in the sense of making plans or just giving thought to things you'd like to nurture in your life. There is a really beautiful opportunity at this time of year for connection with yourself, your body & your baby too, whilst the fires are lit, we can get cosy with blankets & warm drinks & use the excuse of the weather for a little quiet solitude when we need it!

So with introspection in mind, I would love to offer to you a one minute meditation, to relax & focus on this return of the light,

one minute solstice meditation

  • Take your attention to your breath

  • Focus on your breathing, without any attempt to alter the breath

  • Simply observing your breath now, as it draws in and then naturally draws out

  • Can you feel the depth of your in breath? Where do you feel it? Where does it reach within your body?

  • Can you notice a gentle pause between the in breath & out breath, a stillness perhaps between the breaths?

  • Perhaps you could imagine this pause, this stillness as a place of rest

  • This quiet moment where there is no need for instruction or direction

  • Your body is in control & your mind can be free

  • Perhaps you could begin to give a shape or space to this pause. A space where the light can filter inwards

  • You breathe deeper & you allow this space to open wide, it becomes so big & so wide that you find yourself surrounded in light & warmth

  • The light reaches inwards, through you and all around you!

  • You feel relaxed as you bathe in the warmth of the light, feeling calm, relaxed & at peace

  • Focus on this feeling of warmth & relaxation as you breathe through the one minute light reflections in the video below
